Clayton is named after Ralph Clayton, a native Virginian farmer who settled here in the 1830s. By the early 1880s, Clayton had a schoolhouse and local newspaper. By the late 1890s, the town boasted an electric trolley and a volunteer fire department, and by the turn of the 20th century, Clayton enjoyed electric, water, and phone lines. Clayton was incorporated in 1913. Since then, Clayton has continued to prosper while maintaining its historical roots.

Downtown Clayton offers a variety of shopping and dining opportunities, from eclectic boutiques, fine jewelers, and galleries to award-winning restaurants. Area hospitals include SSM St. Mary’s Health Center, St. Louis University Hospital, and St. Alexius Hospital. MetroLink is the region’s light rail system, and connects neighborhoods, downtown St. Louis, and Lambert International Airport. MetroBus also provides public transportation. The major highways are Interstates 44, 55, 64, and 70.
