History

The Osage tribe lived in the region, a member of the Dhegiha Sioux group of tribes. In the 1800s, European descendants came to Missouri, and by the mid-nineteenth century, Des Peres was settled by German and southern immigrants. The region was primarily a farming community, and as the St. Louis area population and economy grew, residential and commercial development expanded here as well. Today, Des Peres real estate reflects its ties to St. Louis in its variety, but has its own spirit and identity.

West County Center is Des Peres’ major shopping center. Parks and Recreation

Des Peres has six parks, Des Peres Park, Harwood Park, Pioneer Park, Sugar Creek Park, and Phantom Forest and Bittersweet Woods. Des Peres Park’s amenities include ball fields and walking paths. Harwood Park is a pretty neighborhood park with a new, well-appointed playground and picnic shelter. Pioneer Park has big, mature trees and a nice playground. Sugar Creek Park has a new nature-themed playground. Phantom Forest adjoins Bittersweet Woods, and is named after Ray Moore, the Phantom comic illustrator who donated the area to the state. Its woods and trail system makes this area a great place for nature lovers. Des Peres Lodge is a community center with a fitness center, gym, and indoor and outdoor pools. The Lodge’s outdoor pool includes a zero-depth family pool and slide, cool water whirlpool, lazy river, flume slide, splash and sunning pads, and concession stand. St. Louis County’s Queeny Park includes Greensfelder Recreation Complex and historic Jarville House. There are plenty of recreational opportunities nearby as well, including Stages Theater, Laumeier Sculpture Park, Powder Valley Conversation Area, Magic House Children’s Museum, St. Louis Zoo, famed Forest Park, Missouri Botanical Garden, and of course, the St. Louis Gateway Arch.

Parkway School District and Kirkwood School District serve the community of Des Peres. Parkway School District boasts “Blue Ribbon” schools and some of the best college entrance exam scores in the country. Kirkwood School District has earned a Distinction in Performance Award, the state’s highest recognition, each year since the award’s inception. Des Peres public schools spend approximately $5,300 per student and there are 15.5 students per teacher. The private schools are St. Clement of Rome School and St. Paul’s Lutheran School. The city also has a Montessori school, Des Peres Montessori. Nearby colleges and universities include St. Louis Community College, Maryville University, Webster University, St. Louis University, and a campus of the University of Missouri.

For medical needs, Des Peres Hospital has a fully accredited Chest Pain Center and a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. A number of other excellent hospitals are available throughout the St. Loius metro area. Metro Transit provides public transportation. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is minutes away and the major arterials are Interstate 270, and Routes 100, 67, 61, which are close to most Des Peres real estate.
